How Alcohol Causes Dehydration

Have you ever wondered how drinking a fluid can lead to dehydration? Well, all fluids aren’t created equal. Although wines, beers and liquors all contain water, they also contain alcohol molecules that quickly find their way to the brain. Once there, these alcohol molecules begin to affect a number of brain functions. One such function is the production of vasopressin by the pituitary gland.

Vasopressin is an anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) that helps regulate the amount of water in your body. Normally, we urinate regularly to rid ourselves of excess water. However, when the pituitary gland senses that water levels are getting low, it releases ADH to slow the kidney’s production of urine and hence reduce the amount of urination. Unfortunately, alcohol inhibits the production of this hormone, leading to excess urination, which in turn leads to dehydration.

Although drinking water along with the alcohol will help some, only a fraction of the extra water will be retained since the alcohol will still be affecting the brain. The best bet is to drink plenty of water once the alcohol has made its way out of your system in order to rehydrate to normal levels.
